Can you imagine what it would be like if artists were paid equally to those working in accounting, or in the tech field? Where entrepreneurs wouldn’t be told to “get a real job”, or be discounted because they don’t work for someone else? Where they were no longer disrespected or made to feel unworthy because they don’t make as much as (fill in the blank)?

What if they were praised for being their own boss? Where they had the support and encouragement of everyone around them — the same type of support given had they instead chose to be a lawyer or a doctor?

Just imagine for a moment.

My personality doesn’t suite working for someone else. I have too big an imagination to be sitting behind a desk, working a 9-5. It goes against my innate character. It’s just not how I’m wired. I’ve tried it, and as a lifelong entrepreneur, I can confidently say that putting myself in that situation is like telling an engineer to start creating for a living — to reverse what comes naturally.

I long for the day when art is valued. Truly valued by everyone. Where people see that the love and passion we pour into our work makes a difference. It matters. Where there is less judgement towards artists who decide to go for it on their own. When small minds stop assuming you lazily sit on the couch watching tv all day, and instead (finally) understand the grit and determination and strength it takes to be a businesswoman (or man). When they measure success, not by finances, but by happiness, not by fancy cars or houses, but by hearts impacted.
