Product Photography For Sélia & Co: Skincare Powered By Tea

Product Photography, TestimonialsVoyage + HeartComment

Two years ago, Flora Leung decided to combine two of her biggest passions to create Sélia & Co — a vegan skincare line that revolves around organic, fair-trade tea. After extensively testing different ingredients in her kitchen, on her friends and family, and even throwing skincare parties to receive feedback, her three hero masks were created.

Brilliant in it’s simplicity, Sélia & Co goes to show that simple, minimalistic products can make a big difference! Operating under the principle “less is more”, all her products are handcrafted in Brooklyn, New York with seven plant-based ingredients or less — each purpose-driven and ethically sourced. Full of natural antioxidants and healing properties from the various teas used, they’re never diluted or made with harsh chemicals, artificial preservatives, parabens, or sulfates. Detoxing powers help combat free radicals and restore the health of your skin naturally.

Focusing on experience, Flora recommends starting your skincare ritual off with the Jasmine and Green Tea Facial Steam, which opens up your pores to purge impurities. Follow with any of the available masks (Peppermint and Green Tea, Rose and Rooibos Tea, or Lavender and Black Tea). To activate the mask and benefit from additional nutrients, Flora encourages her customers to get creative by replacing water with aloe, honey, or coconut water. For a smooth consistency, mix 1 tsp of the mask powder with 1-1.5 tsp of liquid. Apply for 10-15 mins and wash off. Follow with a Sélia & Co skin toner, and moisturize!

When Flora first emailed me about her decision to outsource her product photography, this is what she had to say: “I think my images now are stiff and for function only. It doesn't quite portray the experience the customers can have with the product, nor provoke any emotions. I am ready to elevate! I want to establish a stronger bond with our clients and I think clean images like yours might just be the answer!

After further discussing her vision and needs, we opted for a mix of imagery. Lifestyle imagery demonstrates process and encourages call-to-action. Attire was carefully chosen — the beautifully-textured waffle linen bathrobe lends a spa-like feel, while the teal blue shirt and crisp white pants showcase her brand colors, allowing them to merge seamlessly with her website, social media feeds, and marketing materials. Clean, simple e-commerce photography features the product on white ground and allows the details to stand out. For the latter, I incorporated light styling to soften the image, incorporating simple greenery, handmade ceramic dishes, and perfectly-wrinkled linens.

I absolutely loved shooting for Sélia & Co, and the creativity I felt while planning the images for this natural skincare line — the ideas just kept flowing! Take a look at some of my favorites from Flora’s gallery below, then upgrade your self-care routine by supporting this thoughtful business and following them on Instagram!

From Selia & Co:

“I loved working with Elle! She is very communicative through every step of the way and I love the way she expresses with her words. Her attention to detail is impeccable, and the images she takes are positioned so carefully and mindfully. The consciousness of everything resonated with me a lot, and I highly recommend her to any brand, any time."

How do you stand out from the competition?

From the moment we hit that “snooze” button on our alarm clock and start our morning scroll on Instagram, to the second we close our eyes at night, we’re inundated with content — images, ads, advertisements, and more.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
So let me ask: in a sea of content, what makes your products stand out?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your images should be thoughtful and intentional, align with your brand, speak to your dream clients, evoke emotion in the viewer, and show off the quality of your work.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
Creating on-brand imagery is a long-term process, but one that every successful business understands is a worthy investment. If you’re ready to stand out from the crowd, create consistency within your feed, and build credibility as an expert, drop me a line and let’s talk about how we can work together!

Product Photography for Shea Brand: Organic Shea Butter + CBD Line

Product Photography, Slow/Sustainable Living, TestimonialsVoyage + HeartComment

Founded by Marie, Krystal, and Austin — three friends with very different backgrounds — Shea Brand started as a way to combat eczema using the healing benefits of USDA certified organic raw shea butter. A powerfully nourishing moisturizer, just a little Shea Butter goes a long way. Its fatty acids help to replenish important lipids and strengthen cell membranes, regenerating, softening, and protecting dry, dehydrated, healing, and sensitive skin and hair. Used on eczema, to eliminate scars, prevent stretch marks, smooth Keratosis Pilaris, and heal burned and damaged skin, this line has proven to be life-changing for many!

Since their launch, Shea Brand has expanded their vision and mission, adding in additional products that provide value, such as their popular CBD line. Austin (a former medical cannabis grower) saw the benefits of full spectrum CBD oil first-hand when he began providing it to a relative to help improve his health. Knowing that tools like high quality CBD oil are integral to many, they slowly and carefully built what they say is one of the most beautiful and highest quality tinctures on the market, along with other CBD items like the Shea Butter Pain Reliever, Menstrual Roller, Headache Roller, and more. Topicals are absorbed through the skin, and as the CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors responsible for pain, you’ll find relief from muscle aches, soreness, chronic joint pain, headaches, menstrual cramps, and more. The CBD oil, taken sublingually, helps provide relief from ailments associated with anxiety, muscle tension, neuropathic pain, and insomnia.

Responsible and intentional, Shea Brand’s products contain no chemicals, no palm oil, are cruelty-free, and free of synthetics, chemical stabilizers, parabens, phthalates, and sulfates. What they do include? Certified organic ingredients (no GMO) and medicinal-grade, steam-distilled essential and cold-pressed oils. Manufactured in small batches in NYC, products come in minimal to no plastic, with 100% recyclable packaging that has been thoughtfully chosen for its environmental and humanitarian impact. From glass bottles, to metal tins, to cardboard tubes, their choice in vessels throughout the line is sustainable, reusable, and recyclable.

Every product comes in it’s own unique packaging, created by Krystal and Marie. Their process begins with free-form illustrations, and ends with bold, colorful works of art closely tied to their story. These intentional designs are meant to communicate the love for and connection between the self and environment, linking the urban world and natural world, and showing that they can live in harmony and thrive together.

I was asked to create imagery of the entire Shea Brand product line, including the CBD line and Shea Butter line. Focusing on both basic shots and family-style groupings, the resulting product photography is perfect for e-commerce purposes (like an online shop) or social media accounts alike! While I love incorporating styling elements, this session called for clean and minimalist layouts and primarily white backgrounds, so the focus is on the product and only the products. My approach was to keep it simple, allowing the custom artwork (which reminds me of album cover art) to stand out beautifully, clearly portray the value of their products, and share those little details that say so much about this brand.

Whether you’re looking for a daily moisturizer (the Jasmine shea butter tin is my absolute favorite!), CBD products to help keep your anxiety or pain at bay, or facial sprays to keep you feeling clean and refreshed, don’t hesitate to support Shea Brand or follow them on Instagram.

From Shea Brand:

Product Photography for Knickey: Organic Cotton, Sustainably Made Intimates

Product Photography, Slow/Sustainable Living, TestimonialsVoyage + HeartComment

Cayla Davis focused her Masters thesis on fashion and sustainability practices in the supply chain. After working in the fashion and home textiles industries, she realized the negative impacts the industry has on the planet and our bodies, and the need to do better. So, a year and a half ago, she started a company from her living room that is certified sustainable throughout the entire supply chain, prioritizes fair trade labor practices, and creates a better product for your body. Five months ago, Knickey launched.

The vast majority of underwear are synthetics made from crude oil, toxic chemicals, and carcinogens, all of which are well-known endocrine-disrupters.

Holding to the belief that what you put on your body is just as important as what you put in it, Knickey solves this problem by offering affordable, elevated underwear designed for female-identifying humans. They use GOTS certified organic cotton which is made free from pesticides, fertilizers, and harmful chemicals, is safe for your skin, and has 1/4 of the environmental impact of conventional cotton. GOTS is recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers, holding businesses to strict environmental and social criteria. Using only Oeko Tex certified dyes, which means Azo colourants, nickel, lead, cadmium, formaldehyde, and pentachlorophenol (just to name a few) are left off of the ingredient list. What all this means? No toxic chemicals are used in the production process.

The real deal, Knickey is founded on a strong ethos of sustainable practices and constantly striving to improve. Transparent about their process and practices, they disclose their full supply chain and certification adherences on their website. Fair Trade certified though Ecocert International, their factories ensure everyone involved in production is treated with respect and care. Employees are paid living wages and work in safe conditions where there are absolutely no toxic substances harmful to their health. Packaging is plastic-free, and made with recycled content, post-consumer waste, and low impact inks. Boxes are produced by FSC-certified suppliers who prioritize the preservation of natural ecosystems and prevent deforestation.

Made for women who seek comfort, versatility, and durability, the core collection is made up of four styles ranging in coverage (high-rise brief, mid-rise hipster, low-rise bikini, low-rise thong), and four beautifully-curated colors (midnight moon, beach bum, peachy keen, butterscotch). Soft, breathable, and insanely comfortable, it’s easy to make Knickey your everyday choice.

If you’ve found it challenging to find cleaner, safer, more sustainable intimates for yourself or your family, give your top-drawer a makeover with Knickey, or follow them on Instagram! Already have a collection of Knickey’s? They recommend you take care of them by washing in cold water, saving energy and lessening your impact on the environment. Lay flat or hang to dry.

Wondering what to do with your laundry-day rejects, now that you’ve upgraded? Knickey has partnered with an NYC non-profit to recycle used intimates, preventing your textiles from ending up in the landfill (where many fabrics leach chemicals into the earth as they biodegrade over time). Instead of tossing them into the trash, all you have to do is apply for a shipping label, send in your (freshly washed) old and worn undergarments, and they’ll be separated by fabric type, broken down into new fibers, and used in secondary textiles like insulation, mattress batting, and more. As a bonus, when you partake in this recycling program, Knickey includes a free pair of underwear in your next order!

From Knickey:

“These photos are beautiful! Thank you so much for this lovely collection, and for sharing our story on social and your blog. It is truly stunning and we are so thrilled with the final product! It was such a pleasure working with you - please do keep in touch! We hope to find new ways to work together in the future!”
